Time is the most universal and democratic thing there is.
We all have 24 hours. Every day those 24 hours are renewed.
Tomorrow, we have 24 more, and the next day, and the day after that.
Many things must fit into those 24 hours.
Sleeping, eating, personal care.
Work.
Relationships, family, friends.
Hobbies: reading, playing, gaming, dancing.
All the things that are necessary to keep life going: commuting, grocery shopping, cooking, home repairs, filling taxes, etc.
Even with these limitations, what we do with those 24 hours is a choice.
It can be hard to see, to accept that we have that choice, because we are so conditioned by the belief “I don’t have time”.
But we do. We have 24 hours every single day.
Recognising what our "time thieves" is the first step towards taking more control of our time management. Try, for a week, keeping a record of where you spend your time, and how much time you actually spend doing each thing. In your calendar you may have a one-hour meeting, but if you have to stop working 10 minutes beforehand, and the meeting lasts an additional 20 minutes, and a colleague spends 15 minutes venting about the meeting afterwards, it's not really an hour, is it?
Realising how we spend our time is the first step towards taking action and becoming more in control.
In my next article I’ll share tips on how to take action!
